Create signature

Add your signature to Gmail.

How to paste your copied signature into Gmail’s settings, add an image and set it as your default.

Paste your signature

  1. In the builder’s Export tab, click Copy signature (or Copy details & download image if you uploaded an image).
  2. Open Gmail on your computer. At the top right, click Settings (the gear), then See all settings.
  3. On the General tab, scroll to the Signature section. If you don’t have a signature yet, create a new one and give it a name.
  4. Click inside the signature box and paste: Ctrl+V on Windows or ⌘+V on a Mac.
  5. Choose which signature to use by default for new emails and for replies or forwards, using the options under the signature box.
  6. At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.

Add your logo or photo

If you uploaded an image in the builder, it isn’t in the copied signature. Add the downloaded file in Gmail:

  1. In the signature box, click where the image should go, usually at the very start, before your name.
  2. Use the image button in the signature editor’s toolbar. Google lists three sources: Upload, My Drive and Web Address (URL).
  3. Choose Upload and select the image you downloaded from the builder. Use the builder’s Exact size download for Gmail.
  4. Click Save Changes.

Google recommends signature images around 70–100 pixels high by 300–400 pixels wide, and says the maximum is 100 pixels high by 1,000 pixels wide. Images count toward the 10,000-character signature limit. If you add an image from My Drive, Google says its sharing must be set so anyone with the link can view it.

Using an Image URL in the builder instead? Then the image is already in the copied signature, as long as it loaded in the preview.

Several addresses

If you use Gmail’s “Send mail as” feature, you can add a different signature for each address and choose it from the menu above the signature box.

On your phone

The Gmail app has its own Mobile signature setting that applies only to emails sent from the app. If you don’t set one, Gmail uses the signature you created on your computer. Mobile signatures may not keep formatting or images.

Test it

  1. Compose a new email to yourself and to an address on a different email app (for example, an Outlook or iCloud address).
  2. Check the image, spacing and that every link opens the right page.
  3. Reply to and forward the test once to see how the signature behaves in a thread.

Gmail shows an error or won’t save? The signature is probably over the 10,000-character limit, often because of a large image. Resize the image in Gmail or remove optional lines. See troubleshooting.
